GEO consulting for consumer brands.
GEO consulting, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your brand recommended inside AI-generated answers rather than ranked on a page of blue links. Shelf Help AI does it for challenger and mid-size consumer brands in the United States, on fixed scope and fixed price, with no open-ended retainer.
When a shopper asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini what to buy in your category, the assistant names two or three brands and moves on. There is no page two. GEO is the discipline of being one of the brands it names, and for a consumer brand it is mostly a data and content problem rather than a media problem.
How GEO differs from classic SEO
The fundamentals overlap. The goal does not. SEO earns a click; GEO earns a recommendation, often with no click at all.
Classic SEO
Competes for a ranked position on a results page. Success is a click through to your site. Optimizes for keywords a shopper types into a search box, and measures impressions, position, and organic sessions. Ten blue links means ten chances to be chosen.
GEO
Competes to be named inside a generated answer. Success is being recommended, whether or not anyone clicks. Optimizes for the need-state questions shoppers ask in conversation, and measures citation rate, position within the answer, accuracy, and competitor share. Two or three brands named means the shortlist is the whole game.
The practical consequence for a consumer brand: your ingredient list, sugar content, price, retailer availability, and return policy stop being marketing copy and start being structured data that a machine either can or cannot read. Most of the GEO work we do is making facts extractable, not writing more content.
How GEO consulting works here
Three stages, each sold separately, each with a defined end. You can stop after any of them, and plenty of brands stop after the first.
AI Visibility Audit
$1,950 fixed · about one week
20 to 30 buyer-style prompts scored across the major AI assistants, plus a full AEO technical audit of your site. You find out where you actually stand, which competitors take the answers you miss, and what is causing it. Ends with a prioritized fix roadmap your team keeps whether or not we work together again.
See the audit →Agentic Commerce Readiness
$3,000 to $8,000 per scope
Implementation of what the audit found: structured data and schema across your site templates, llms.txt and bot governance, product attribute enrichment, and an answer-content rewrite of your top pages. Quoted directly from your own fix roadmap, so there is no second discovery phase to pay for.
See the scope menu →Share of Model Tracker
$295/mo · cancel any time
The models keep changing their minds, so GEO is not a one-time project. Monthly re-runs of your prompt set with a short trend report: citation rate, position, competitor movement, and what changed. Month to month, or twelve months for the price of ten.
See the tracker →Most brands start with the audit and the first three months of tracking together at $2,595, because the baseline and the trend line are worth more bought as one decision than as two.
What you actually get
Deliverables, not a workstream. Everything below is a document or a change to your site that exists when the engagement ends.
From the diagnosis
- A Share of Model scorecard: your brand against your top 3 to 5 competitors, across the major AI assistants
- Every answer we scored, kept on file, so any claim in the report traces back to something you can read
- An AEO technical checklist result across bot governance, structured data, content structure, entity strength, and commerce data readiness
- A prioritized fix roadmap: every failed check mapped to impact and effort, top ten sequenced, quick wins flagged
- A one-page scorecard built to be forwarded to your CEO without translation
From the implementation
- JSON-LD schema deployed across your site templates: Organization, Product with real attributes, FAQPage, sameAs entity links
- An llms.txt manifest and a robots.txt that actually admits GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the rest
- Product attribute enrichment so ingredients, claims, sizes, and availability are extractable text rather than images
- Answer-content rewrites of your highest-value pages, structured so an assistant can quote a clean sentence
- A retailer and review-platform hygiene pass on the listings AI assistants cite most in your category
Who this is for
A good fit if
- You are a consumer brand roughly $5M to $500M in revenue, in food and beverage, beauty and personal care, household, or wellness
- You have a live DTC or brand site you can make changes to
- You want a fixed price and a defined end date rather than an ongoing agency program
- You would rather your own team execute the fixes with a clear roadmap than outsource them permanently
Probably not a fit if
- You want an always-on monitoring dashboard as the primary deliverable. A subscription platform will serve you better, and we will tell you which one
- You need a large retained program with a dedicated pod. Agencies built for that exist and publish rates starting at $15,000 a month
- You are pre-launch with no site and no product data yet. Come back when there is something for an assistant to read
- You want guaranteed citations. Nobody can honestly promise that, and anyone who does is selling certainty that does not exist
Common questions about GEO consulting
What is GEO consulting?
GEO consulting, or generative engine optimization consulting, is the work of getting a brand recommended inside AI-generated answers rather than ranked on a search results page. For consumer brands it covers structured product data and schema, machine-readable content, bot governance, retailer and review-platform presence, and ongoing measurement of how often AI assistants cite the brand versus competitors. At Shelf Help AI the diagnosis is the AI Visibility Audit, the implementation is Agentic Commerce Readiness, and the measurement is the monthly Share of Model Tracker.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
In practice the two terms are used interchangeably, and most practitioners will tell you the same. Where a distinction is drawn, AEO, answer engine optimization, usually refers to the technical side of making a site machine-readable and quotable: structured data, crawl access, definitional writing, clean content structure. GEO, generative engine optimization, is used more broadly for the whole job of earning recommendations inside generated answers, including entity strength, third-party citations, retailer presence, and measurement. Shelf Help AI treats the AEO technical audit as one component inside GEO consulting rather than as a separate service.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO competes for a click on a results page; GEO competes to be named inside a generated answer, where there may be no click at all. They share fundamentals such as crawlability and clean site structure, then diverge sharply. GEO leans much harder on structured data, extractable product attributes, definitional first sentences, entity consistency across the web, and third-party signals. Success is measured as citation rate and position within an answer rather than rank and sessions.
How much does GEO consulting cost?
At Shelf Help AI: the AI Visibility Audit is $1,950 fixed, Agentic Commerce Readiness implementation runs $3,000 to $8,000 depending on scope, and the Share of Model Tracker is $295 per month with no minimum term. Most brands begin with the audit plus three months of tracking at $2,595. For context, agencies serving enterprise clients in this space publish considerably higher figures; iPullRank lists its AI Search Strategy program at "starting at $15,000/month" and NoGood states its average retainer is above $20,000 per month. Those are appropriate for large brands with dedicated budgets and are not what Shelf Help AI competes on.
How long does GEO take to work?
The technical fixes can be implemented in weeks, but the models need to re-crawl and, in some cases, re-train before the change shows up in answers. Expect a first read on movement at 30 to 60 days after fixes ship, and a clearer trend at 90 days. This is the main argument for tracking rather than a single re-test: without a monthly trend line you cannot separate a real improvement from ordinary answer variance.
Can you guarantee my brand will be recommended by AI assistants?
No, and treat any firm that guarantees it with suspicion. What can be committed to is the diagnosis and the work: you will know exactly where you stand across the major assistants, what is causing it, and what to fix in what order, and the fixes will be implemented properly. Whether a given model names your brand next month depends on factors no vendor controls, including how the model is trained and what your competitors do.
Do I need to buy an AI monitoring tool as well as GEO consulting?
Not necessarily, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default. Monitoring platforms such as Profound, AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Otterly.ai publish entry prices in the range of roughly $99 to $295 a month, with the useful tiers generally higher and some assistants sold as add-ons. They are genuinely good at watching a number continuously. If your brand needs that, we will say so plainly, including when a platform is the better purchase than our tracker. What a tool will not do is tell you what the number means for your category or sequence the fixes for you.
